KIR Migration – Completion Date – June 2009

KIR S.A. in Poland is one of the biggest European clearing houses. It has been carrying out secure and efficient clearing services for 17 years. In 2008 the monthly number of carried out non-cash payment transactions exceeded 100 million for the first time in its history. In June last year, MSS successfully completed a 12 month migration for KIR, taking them from their Unisys mainframe to Linux. Code in Cobol, Linc and Algol were all migrated into Java with the WFL job control programs converted to perl script. With large batches of transactions being processed in short timeframes and very strict deadlines with the National Bank of Poland, a smooth transition to the new environment was critical. From the go-live the new system performed very well with less expensive machines that performed better than those previous and displayed the requisite resilient characteristics.

Their decision to move to virtualised servers using vmware appears to have paid off admirably for them. The original programmers were very quickly retrained in JAVA and continue to support the new migrated system with ease. Overall KIR’s ability to move forward using lower cost hardware and software is already creating significant financial and operational benefits.

Toronto Police Service: Smooth Implementation of New Technology

Toronto Police Service is one of the largest municipal police forces in North America, serving the City of Toronto, the largest city in Canada with a population of more than 2.5 million residents. In standardizing on the AIX platform, TPS contracted MSS for a fully automated migration of their CASC system from LINC and COBOL to Java (J2EE), XML and DB2. Using the well-proven migrate!LINC product and the newer migrate!COBOL (Java) technology, the migration was accomplished in 3 months and, after extensive testing, went live at the beginning of May 2008.

The cut-over was summed up as a ‘smooth implementation’ with the online users (up to 6000 with 80 concurrent users on average) barely affected. This is an achievement considering the changes involved: Linc migrated to Java, Cobol migrated to Java, WFL to shell script, scheduling system to crontab, DMSII database to DB2, COMS replaced by Websphere and the underlying MCP platform replaced with a standard AIX (IBM p Series) system.
